USC QB Connor Mitch out 4 to 6 weeks, in hospital for infection
South Carolina starting quarterback Connor Mitch will be out at least four to six weeks and currently is in the hospital “for a couple days” to receive treatment for a hip infection, Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier said Sunday.
Mitch separated his right shoulder during Saturday night’s 26-22 loss to Kentucky. Junior Perry Orth will start for the Gamecocks (1-1, 0-1 SEC) when they face No. 7 Georgia (2-0, 1-0 SEC) in Athens on Saturday at 6 p.m.
“We have confidence in Perry,” Spurrier said. “It was unfortunate Connor got hurt, but you have to move on to the next player.”
Freshman Lorenzo Nunez “could play some” against the Bulldogs, although Michael Scarnecchia also is a consideration for the backup position until Mitch returns, Spurrier said.
