Darius Rucker teases ‘party on the Horseshoe’ with Gamecock national title

Another South Carolina national championship might mean a special performance for Darius Rucker.

The country musician and lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish hinted Friday night that he would perform a free concert on The Horseshoe, in the heart of USC’s campus, if the Gamecock women’s basketball team wins a national championship.

South Carolina is a win away from the school’s second national title after defeating Louisville 72-59 on Friday in the first national semifinal. The Gamecocks play the Connecticut-Stanford winner for the national championship on Sunday at 8 p.m.

“Yeeeessssssss!!!!! Let’s go @GamecockWBB and @dawnstaley!! We got POY and COY. One more win and unsay we have a party on the Horseshoe. Free show for the Natty. What say u Gamecocks?!?!?!?!” Rucker tweeted after the game.

It wouldn’t be the first time Rucker delivered a free concert at USC after a promise made during a sports season. In 2017, he performed a free concert at Colonial Life Arena after the Gamecocks won six games in Will Muschamp’s first season as football coach.

Rucker is a South Carolina native who went to USC, is an avid Gamecock supporter and attends many sporting events throughout the year. He traveled to New York and then Arizona during USC men’s basketball Final Four run in 2018.

Rucker was at the Greensboro Regional final last week to see Dawn Staley’s Gamecock women’s squad.
