Highly productive transfer receiver commits to South Carolina
The South Carolina football team strengthened its receiving corps on Monday.
James Madison transfer receiver Antwane Wells committed to Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks through social media posts. He joins Central Michigan defensive back Devonni Reed and North Carolina State defensive lineman Terrell Dawkins as other transfers to commit recently for the Gamecocks’ Class of 2022.
The Gamecocks have five transfer commitments so far for the Class of 2022 and 29 total recruits including transfers.
“It’s up and it’s stuck let’s work !!!” Wells posted on his Twitter page on Monday.
This season, Wells had 83 catches for 1,250 yards and 15 touchdowns, all JMU records, before entering the transfer portal earlier this month. He earned second-team All-American honors by several different publications. James Madison made it to the FCS semifinals before losing to North Dakota State and finished No. 3 in the final Top 25 poll.
In two seasons, Wells was already third on JMU’s career receiving touchdowns list (21), ninth on the school’s career receiving yards list (1,853) and ninth on the school’s career receptions list (116).
Wells, originally from Richmond, Virginia, picked the Gamecocks over numerous other Power 5 offers, including Auburn, North Carolina, Louisville, Miami and Mississippi State. He visited South Carolina over the weekend. It was reported that he had scheduled an upcoming official visit with the Tar Heels. But he told TheBigSpur that visit wasn’t going to happen.
Before going to James Madison, Wells spent one year at Fork Union Military Academy. The 6-foot-1, 204-pound wideout will have three years of eligibility remaining at South Carolina.
Wells joins Southlake Carroll receiver Landon Samson and Chapin’s Zavier Short as receivers for the Gamecocks in the Class of 2022. South Carolina also will get Josh Vann back for another season after he decided not to enter the NFL Draft.
