Productive wide receiver transfer officially joins South Carolina roster

New South Carolina football wide receiver Jalen Brooks is officially on the Gamecocks roster.

His name and bio appeared there Thursday, still without a number. The North Carolina product and transfer from Division II Wingate committed to USC a few weeks ago. He also moved in on campus Thursday morning.

“It’s exciting. I’m ready to work,” Brooks said Thursday morning. “That’s all I can say about it. I’m just excited.”

Brooks (6-foot-3, 190 pounds) spent the spring at Tarleton State in Texas.

The former first-team All-South Atlantic Conference pass catcher’s bio reads: “Transfer wide receiver who joined the team in August... will have three years to play two at South Carolina.”

In high school, he played in North Carolina for current Blythewood High School coach Jason Seidel.

As a freshman with the Bulldogs, Brooks posted 17 catches for 297 yards at 17.5 yards per catch with four scores. He blossomed last season, with 35 catches, 751 yards, six TDs and more than 21 yards per catch.

Brooks is on track to sit this season because of transfer rules, but will likely apply for an NCAA waiver to play. If he gets that approval and the season happens amid the coronavirus pandemic, he could provide another option to an offense that’s short on reliable pass catchers.
