Top uncommitted in-state player, Gamecocks target sets commitment date for this week

At 7-foot-1, Greenville’s John Butler has been on South Carolina basketball’s radar for a while.

This week, fans of the Gamecocks and Frank Martin will learn if they’ve reeled in the top-60 national recruit.

Butler tweeted he’ll announce his commitment on Wednesday. His top six is USC, Alabama, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

The skinny, versatile center picked up his Gamecocks offer in September of 2019. He has visited South Carolina early last season. His father said in May he might not sign during the early signing period.

As a junior, he averaged 17.8 points and eight rebounds and 3.8 blocks a game, playing for his father. The team went 24-2 and reached the state quarterfinals.

Butler is ranked No. 57 in the 247 Sports composite rankings. He’s No. 2 in the state and the only player in the top seven who is uncommitted.

South Carolina already has a pair of guard pledges in hard-nosed Upstate point Jacobi Wright and Miami off-guard Devin Carter.
