Twelve NC State athletics programs can resume activities, but not football

N.C. State athletics will resume activities. Most of them anyway.

Boo Corrigan, director of athletics, released an update Friday morning. Wolfpack athletics paused on Monday and Corrigan said every team was tested. Corrigan added that activities will resume for 12 programs today.

One of the teams that won’t get back on the practice field is the football team.

“We will be testing our football program again,” Corrigan wrote. “Consistent with our process of testing twice per week, and will make a decision on next possible steps when we have additional information available to use.”

Due to a coronavirus cluster within the Wolfpack athletic program, N.C. State’s season-opening game against Virginia Tech was postponed. The game, scheduled for Sept. 12, has moved to Sept. 26.

N.C. State’s first game will now be Sept. 19 at home against Wake Forest. It’s the first time since the 2005 season that the Wolfpack will start at home against a conference opponent.

In a statement on its website, N.C. State reported 27 cases within its athletic department, and of those, not all are athletes.

A cluster is defined by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services as five or more individuals. People who contact COVID-19, or have come in contact with someone who tests positive, should quarantine for 14 days, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the university dashboard, N.C. State has reported 641 cases of COVID-19, with 595 of those cases being students.
