After hot starts by several area players earlier this season, it looked like a larger-than-usual number of offensive standouts may reach the individual milestones typically standing out in high school ball.

Now, the number of tailbacks and receiver who may go for 1,000 yards or quarterbacks looking at 2,000 yards passing has slimmed considerably. Whether it’s because of injury, a change or game plan or simply guys slowing down, there are only a handful of serious contenders who will reach those two benchmarks.

As far as the running backs go, three 1,000-yard rushers from last year - Dyverse Simmons, Brandon Sinclair and Jah’Maine Martin - have either already done so again or, in Martin’s case, still on track to do so.

Conway receiver Bryan Edwards’ knee injury stopped him 31 yards shy of 1,000, leaving Elijah Rice of Myrtle Beach as the best threat on the Grand Strand. Rice is 169 yards away, and the Seahawks have two guaranteed games remaining.

Conway quarterback Peyton Derrick topped 2,000 yards with two regular-season games and at least one playoff game to go. He will likely be joined soon by Georgetown’s Jarvis Brown and Myrtle Beach Drayton Arnold. Both are well within striking distance of reaching it on Friday.
