The Steelers' Offseason Could Still Take One More Move
The Pittsburgh Steelers report to training camp at Saint Vincent College in late July. New head coach Mike McCarthy inherits a roster that won the AFC North last season but was routed in the Wild Card round. As the Steelers enter a new era, several questions surround the team. Beyond evaluating the current roster, Pittsburgh must also decide whether to make another significant move before or during training camp. Do the Steelers have one more roster move up their sleeve?
July and August could set the stage for the Steelers to make a notable addition. General manager Omar Khan has built a reputation for making summer trades, signing key free agents, and negotiating contract extensions. Last summer, he acquired Jalen Ramsey before training camp. In 2023, he also moved on from Steelers players who were either entering the final year of their contracts or failing to meet expectations. With Khan and McCarthy leading the way, every option remains on the table.
A Subtle but Impactful Move the Steelers Could Make
Two positions stand out as concerns: free safety and offensive tackle. While the Steelers have promising rookies at both spots, there is no guarantee either will be ready to handle a full-time starting role immediately. Fortunately, the team has options in both free agency and the trade market. They may not generate the same buzz as the Ramsey acquisition, but they could still make a meaningful impact.
One under-the-radar move would be signing a veteran offensive tackle, with former Detroit Lions tackle Taylor Decker standing out as an intriguing option. Adding Decker would strengthen the offensive line this season while giving Max Iheanachor more time to develop. It would also improve the team's overall depth at the position.
Cam Robinson is another veteran tackle still available in free agency. Both Decker and Robinson are likely waiting for an opportunity that offers a guaranteed starting job at left tackle. The Steelers could become an attractive landing spot if they decide Troy Fautanu is better suited to remain at right tackle.
A Big Swing for the Fences
If the Steelers want to make a blockbuster move, Khan could call the Arizona Cardinals about acquiring Budda Baker. Baker has surfaced in trade rumors for quite some time, but few teams have been willing to absorb his cap hit. Khan has successfully negotiated financial concessions in previous trades. In 2023, the Los Angeles Rams absorbed a portion of Allen Robinson's contract, and the New England Patriots did the same with Kyle Dugger.
Acquiring Baker would likely cost more than a late Day 3 pick swap, but it would significantly strengthen the outlook at free safety. The Steelers might need to part with a fourth-round pick if they want the Cardinals to absorb more of Baker's remaining contract. While a move like this remains a long shot, it cannot be dismissed given Khan's aggressive approach to addressing roster needs.
