SC High School League announces staff member as new interim commissioner
The South Carolina High School League has found an interim commissioner.
The league’s executive committee voted 14-0 on Thursday to approve SCHSL staff member Amy Boozer as interim commissioner as the league continues to look for a permanent replacement for Jerome Singleton.
“We are confident of her abilities to move the league forward and keep the progress and momentum moving,” SCHSL executive committee president Adam Lanford said during the meeting. “We are excited about the opportunity as we move forward through this process to continue to provide for the student-athletes of the state of South Carolina.
“We are grateful to the work that the commissioner has done, and we are grateful to the steps we take going forward.”
Boozer is the first female to hold the role as SCHSL commissioner either as interim or in a full-time role.
The personnel and finance committee interviewed candidates on Monday and then brought a recommendation for the interim hire back to the full committee. A search firm will assist with finding the league’s next full-time commissioner. Boozer will serve as interim commissioner as a national search takes place, and it’s likely she’ll be considered as a candidate for the full-time role.
Boozer will take on the interim role starting July 1, a move that will end Singleton’s almost 21-year tenure as SCHSL commissioner. The league’s executive committee announced in March that Singleton would retire no later than July 1, 2027, “pending the finding of an acceptable replacement.” Singleton, 66, still had five years left on his contract at the time of that announcement.
Boozer, who is from Saluda, has been with the SCHSL since 2016 as an associate commissioner. Her duties have included overseeing volleyball, competitive cheer, boys and girls golf, softball, eligibility, transfers, foreign exchange students and middle school sports.
Before coming to the SCHSL, Boozer spent 19 years as coach and teacher at Newberry High School. Boozer coached volleyball, softball and boys golf. Newberry won the 2000 Class 3A Lower State title in volleyball. She also has served as the executive secretary/treasurer of the South Carolina Coaches Association of Women’s Sports.
Boozer is a graduate of Lander University in Greenwood.
