Gamecocks commit Gunner Stockton in a five-star QB showdown tonight. How to watch

Five-star quarterback and South Carolina football commit Gunner Stockton has led his Rabun County team to 23 wins in his first two seasons as a starter.

To get to win No. 24, his team will have to get past another five-star passer headed to an SEC program.

Stockton and his Wildcats will face off against Prince Avenue Christian in Athens and its Georgia-bound quarterback Brock Vandagriff, the No. 13 prospect in the 2021 class by the 247Sports Composite rankings. Stockton is No. 24 player in 2022 class.

Kickoff will be at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.

Stockton opened the season by throwing for 153 yards and three touchdowns, with 81 more yards and a score on the ground, in a comfortable win against Ridgeland. Vandagriff posted 246 passing yards, 96 rushing yards and six total touchdowns in a blowout win against Calvary Day.

Both quarterbacks have dual-threat aspects of their games, as Stockton ran for 709 and then 1,126 yards in his first two seasons, while Vandagriff topped 1,000 yards as a sophomore before an injury-limited junior campaign.

This is the first meeting between the two programs.

Stockton committed to the Gamecocks this summer, and if his ranking holds, he’ll be the highest-rated quarterback to join the team in program history. Coach Will Muschamp’s staff has already added two five-star recruits in Zacch Pickens and Jordan Burch.

Stockton’s connections to the current Gamecocks staff run deep. He grew up idolizing Connor Shaw, wearing his No. 14. Stockton played for Shaw’s father, Lee, and now for his brother, Jaybo. Stockton was also taught to throw by George Bobo, a respected local coach who is also the father of current Gamecocks offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.
