Wednesday’s area sports briefs
The Waccamaw baseball team has clinched a spot in the playoffs.
While the Warriors don’t exactly know what seed they’ll be, coach Jeff Gregory believes in his squad.
“Region VIII is tough. It doesn’t matter where you fall, you can still compete whether you’re number one or near the bottom,” said Gregory, whose team shut out Andrews 10-0 in five innings Wednesday. “We’d like to be [the No. 1 seed], but wherever we go we feel pretty good about what we have. We have confidence and it’s been a pretty good year. Pitching has been our strong suit and we feel confident wherever we go.”
Levi Almond picked up the victory Wednesday as struck out four and walked none in three hitless innings. Almond was also 1-for-1 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.
A piece of a strong rotation, Gregory credits Almond for stepping up his game this season.
“He’s a utility guy that plays several different roles,” Gregory said of Almond. “He’s one of our top three pitchers and we’re very fortunate to have a good rotation. All these guys are good and Levi has been swinging the bat well for us all season, too.”
The Warriors have just one contest left and it could be their biggest yet as Loris hosts Waccamaw on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
“It’ll be a huge contest and will determine where we fall,” Gregory said. “We need to finish out strong.”
