Report: Myrtle Beach’s Golson considering transfer from Notre Dame to LSU

According to a newspaper report, Notre Dame quarterback and Myrtle Beach native Everett Golson has reached out to LSU about transferring to the school for his final season of eligibility.

While many media outlets have picked up the report from the (New Orleans) Times-Picayune, Golson took to Twitter to apparently address the claims, saying “Don’t believe everything you hear..”

The Sun News’ attempts to reach Golson were unsuccessful.

The Times-Picayune reports that Golson would be immediately eligible for LSU should he transfer because he is on pace to graduate in May and “the SEC lifted its ban on allowing graduate transfer students last May. The SEC rule allows graduate student transfers without waivers if the student maintained eligibility, had no significant disciplinary issues at the old school and earned all possible [Academic Progress Rate] points. Graduate transfers are required to make progress toward a graduate degree, otherwise the school won't be able to apply the grad-student exception in that athlete's sport for three years.”

According to the report, “LSU is exploring the possibility but would have to obtain a waiver from the conference office since Golson was declared academically ineligible for the 2013 season.”

After sitting out the 2013-14 season after admitting to cheating on a test in a business class, Golson returned as Notre Dame’s starter this past year to pass for 3,445 yards and 29 touchdowns. He also ran for eight touchdowns.

However, he struggled with turnovers, throwing 14 interceptions and fumbling 12 times (eight were lost).

Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly elected to start freshman Malik Zaire over Golson against LSU in the Music City Bowl, though both played.

As a redshirt freshman, Golson led the Fighting Irish to the 2012-2013 championship game, where they lost 42-14 to Alabama. He threw for 2,405 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions and ran for six scores that season.

Golson helped Myrtle Beach High to state championships in 2008 and 2010 and a runner-up finish in 2009. He was committed to North Carolina before choosing instead to attend Notre Dame.
