A Different World

A new, short-term summer attraction in Myrtle Beach - a specialized free Coke machine in Walmart

I stopped by the Walmart in Myrtle Beach on Seaboard Street this morning to pick up a quick item. After walking through the door, I ran into a giddy, animated crowd in line, and a few kids dancing off to the side to loud music.

What was going on? An indoor roller coaster? Announcement of a new ferris wheel? No.

People were giddy over a big new Coke machine from which they could receive two small cans of free Coke, complete with the name of a loved one written in the familiar Coke language on the can.

I will admit that it was a bit exciting and cool - don’t ask me why - but I didn’t have the time to stay in line to get my cans.

Fortunately, the machine will be around a bit longer - though only until 3:30 p.m. today, Friday June 5.

If you want a couple of free cans with the name of your sweetie on it - like that commercial - you better get there before then.

In other more boring news ...

Once again, the economy produced jobs, this time for the 63rd straight month when 280,000 net jobs were created while the unemployment rate ticked up to a still healthy 5.5 percent because more people flooded back into the market.

The U.S. economy has never produced this kind of streak, not during the Clinton boom, not during the early- to mid-Bush era, not ever.
