A Different World

Kanye West and George W. Bush and the power of the race card

Published on Nov. 18, 2010, on my former blog after an NBC interview with Kanye West brought this issue back up.

As I said at the time, it was a horrible, cheap shot Kanye West took at President George W. Bush in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when he called the president a racist. There was much -- much -- to be desired about how we handled that crisis (and many others), but it takes it to a whole other level to say the less-than-perfect response was because Bush didn't like black people. It's one of those statements that shuts down conversations more than any other.

Read what some readers said about it at the time here.
