Blog | ‘American Sniper’ is a hit, ISIS burned pilot alive, Senate passes anti-suicide bill to help U.S. soldiers

The timing of these events shouldn’t be ignored:

While “American Sniper” remains a hit in U.S. movie theaters, ISIS revealed to the world that it had burned a Jordanian pilot alive on the same day the U.S. Senate passed a bill to help soldiers during an era in which the U.S. military suicide rate has hit unprecedented levels.

Closer to home, there has been a debate ongoing in Myrtle Beach about the moving of the Memorial Day parade because of the manpower needed for the Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bikefest as we learned that a contractor from North Myrtle Beach was killed in Afghanistan.

We like to talk tough and respond with anger any time a crazy terrorist organization, like ISIS, does something unspeakably horrible. In that state of mind, we are quick to push for more war and a more aggressive response - despite what we’ve seen for most of the past decade and a half.

At some point we have to come to grips with a few things, that the world isn’t perfect, that responding in anger every time ISIS does something awful isn’t going to make it any more perfect, that terrorists can hit us, and hit us hard no matter how perfect we are, and that above all else, we better start thinking more about our soldiers, their families and the burdens we keep loading on their backs.
