Blog | Banned GoDaddy puppy ad and Top 10 Super Bowl ads of all time (Warning: includes supposedly offensive video)
Update: Just found this list of the Top 10 Super Bowl ads of all time. My favorites are No. 8 and No. 2.
In what has become a tradition, some Super Bowl ads are released online before the big game, which is being held in Arizona this weekend.
One super racy ad from Carl’s Jr. (better known as Hardee’s in the Myrtle Beach area) apparently is almost too hot for TV and won’t be shown except on the West Coast during a particular time slot.
For those interested, here it is.
Another one (above), involving a cute little puppy struggling to find his way home, received even more backlash.
Here’s why:
The GoDaddy version also tells the story of a lost dog making a long journey back to the farm — only to be greeted by his owner with this kicker: “Look, it’s Buddy! I’m so glad you made it home because I just sold you on this website I built with GoDaddy.”
Cue the outrage over what was perceived as a “puppy mill” joke. The video, of course, had already gone viral. Via the hashtag #GoDaddyPuppy, outraged tweets were still rolling in on Wednesday:
I usually enjoy @ GoDaddy 's commercials but you clearly went too far with this one. I'm embarrassed to be a current customer # GoDaddyPuppy
Sorry, but I don’t get the outrage. The ad falls well within the Super Bowl tradition of being a little bit funny and a little bit of a boundary-pusher.
I thought it was funny. Am I missing something?
