A Different World

Blog | No more complaining about people complaining about cold weather in the Myrtle Beach area

I was all set to complain or make jokes about my fellow Southerners being obsessed with supposedly cold weather today, which is impacting most of the country.

I was going to point out the differences between here and what I experienced “up north” last winter in Boston, how I survived one of the worst New England winters in history.

I’d talk about how the snow never seemed to stop falling, never seemed to melt; how the days were so short I began to wonder if the sun was in partial hibernation.

The days below zero and the days in single digits and the teens, and how we wished - and prayed for - weather that would reach the mid-30s, I was going to brag.

Then I went outside this morning to head for work, and the heater in my truck stopped working while the temperature gauge read 18 degrees.

Then my 13-year-old truck clonked out, forcing me to walk the final few minutes of my journey to the office.

And it was cold. My feet began to get cold and my ears felt frozen - and it was only a 5-minute walk.

So, yes, South Carolina, yes, Myrtle Beach, it really is cold - even for a fake Northerner like me.

I’ve learned my lesson. It can get cold anywhere. Even when I was in Boston, an ice storm hit South Carolina and parts of the Grand Strand and people in rural Georgetown County went without electricity for days.

No more complaining about people complaining about the unusually cold weather, particularly given that we’ve just come through a holiday season in which we experienced temperatures in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

How I wish days like those would return soon.
