Blog | America: Don’t give into hackers and 9/11 threats. Go see movie depicting North Korean leader’s head exploding.
I don’t know that I would even like the movie “The Interview.” It looks like one of those super silly flicks I’d need to be in a particular mode before shelling out money to see in a movie theater.
But I want to see it now more than ever - and I hope a lot of other people want to as well.
Currently, the movie is being pulled from wide release because unknown hackers have embarrassed Sony execs by releasing tin-eared, racially-tinged emails and other sensitive information, and because along with that hacking comes the threat of 9-11 type violence for anyone who shows or sees it.
Apparently, someone is upset that the North Korean leader is depicted in a cartoonish way, with his head exploding near the end of the movie.
I don’t know if it would lead to a barrel of laughs, but there’s nothing funny about this outright attempt to stifle free speech in this country by threat and intimidation.
The movie theaters pulling the film from a scheduled release date next week may believe they are saving themselves headaches and from liability concerns, but all they are doing is making it more likely that this will happen again.
Giving into fear this way only invites more attacks - not fewer.
I, for one, hope this movie gets a wide release, and I plan to see it. And I plan to laugh at the depiction of the North Korean leader - even if the jokes aren’t funny.
