Myrtle Beach not greedy; parking fees necessary in era of big government
Re “Myrtle Beach City Council’s greed is showing” letter.
Myrtle beach is not greedy. I understand the letter about Myrtle Beach being greedy by charging beach goers parking fees. But I don’t call it greed. I call it absolute necessity.
Myrtle beach, as do all municipalities across the country, need money to run the business of government. They always need more and more money, and they are constantly looking for more and more ways to tax the people of the city and county.
If you read the daily newspapers, you will notice that during the course of each year, a new tax has been added or a current tax has been increased. Finding new ways to tax the citizens is an ongoing affair for the elected representatives of government at all levels. This occurs each year because the cost of government is constantly rising.
Police and fireman need raises, which I find absolutely necessary. But the administration continues to raise their salaries to the point where they are now earning well above the national average of the worker in private business. Some of the salaries of government workers at all levels of government are mind blowing.
Years ago, the General Motors Corp. was the largest employer, but today the federal government is, by far.
We have local city government. We have county government. We have state government. And we have the gigantic Federal government. Do you think we actually need this much government at the size that they currently are to govern us all? I don’t think so.
Yet government never decreases in size. It is constantly growing, constantly becoming more and more intrusive in our everyday lives. More regulations to choke out small and large businesses. More and more duplication of effort at the state and federal levels. More and more waste of our hard-earned tax dollars.
Our current national debt is $19 trillion and is rapidly growing to $20 trillion. The interest on that debt is upwards of $600 billion per year. That is $600 billion of our hard-earned tax dollars needed each year to pay interest on the money borrowed from China and the banks - not to run the business of government.
Our governments are totally out of control. Both parties are to blame. When are these people going to come to their senses? I am thoroughly discouraged with the way, especially our federal government, is being run.
Each year more than $1.3 trillion is being borrowed to run our federal government. And yet we can give away billions of dollars to foreign governments who in turn hate our guts. It is totally nuts. Our Founding Fathers never meant for our governments to become this big and this out of control.
Who are these people who are elected to represent us? They are certainly not doing the job they were asked to do.
The writer lives in Myrtle Beach.
