Orlando should remind Christians what’s at stake
On June 16 in the Lackey Chapel at Coastal Carolina University, the Episcopal Church in South Carolina hosted a memorial service for the victims of the mass shooting in Orlando. Christians from across the Pee Dee region came to mourn the dead and to show solidarity with the LBGTQ community. The service was conducted as a symbolic act of love because we realize that something is at stake.
What’s at stake is a world in which our hearts become so hardened that we become unconcerned about the lives of others. What’s at stake is a world in which we become so fragmented that we lose all sense of connection with others. What’s at stake is a world which has rejected the notion that love ultimately wins. We Christians all would do well to remember that that message is essentially what Jesus taught and what Jesus’ resurrection is all about: love wins. And we would do well to proclaim that message more boldly and live that message more fully. Because something is at stake.
