Does America need a revolution?
Constantly on the news we hear that people are fed up with Congress and the country's leaders and they want a change that will “make America great again.” Sometimes the rise to prominence of Donald Trump, and sometimes even Bernie Sanders, is called a revolution because their followers want an outsider who will solve all of our problems and do something different.
Donald Trump has become the standard-bearer because he says he is going to solve immigration, bomb out Isis, and create jobs for everyone, but also Bernie Sanders says he will bring in universal health care, offer free college education to all, and also provide everybody with jobs.
Revolutions in world history, and even today, point out that they don't always bring us what we want. For instance, the French revolution brought the nation chaos followed by the dictatorship of Napoleon; the Russian revolution brought in communism and the insane dictatorship of Stalin; and the recent German revolution in a time of poverty and financial strife provided the world Nazism and Hitler.
As of now, revolutions in 19 countries including Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, Algeria and Syria seeking democracy (called the Arab Spring) have ended up mostly in chaos. The point is that the results of revolutions are not always what we expect or want.
The obvious question is, do we need a revolution right now in this country? At this point in time, we are not at war (as we have been recently) that killed and wounded thousands of our youth, together with killing unknown thousands of Afghans and Iraqis and forcing millions to flee the violence in their countries to become refugees, many of whom are now attempting to enter Europe.
Of course the radical members of ISIS, who, among other things are rebelling against these wars, have become an incredible international problem. Al Baghdadi, the head of ISIS, has said in his speeches that he is trying to get the United States to commit ground troops to his land because, with his guerrilla warfare, he will destroy them.
Fortunately we have not done so, because with tactical bombing and world diplomacy, we are wearing ISIS down.
Also at this time, the economy has recovered from the recession and is back on track. Of course all is far from perfect, but silly, undocumented promises like those we now hear will not solve these problems. We need a concerned and politically experienced president, who is concerned about all of the people and is qualified to tackle these complicated, complex problems.
One of the slogans is, “we need to make America great again”; well, for me it never stopped being great, and with sensible leadership, it will continue to be.
Obviously I cannot see why we now need this revolution. Such a silly idea will only drag us back. We need a reflective, informed, compassionate and experienced leader to keep this country moving forward Think about it...and then vote.
