Re William Cash’s letter of Feb. 21, asking for help on Medicare Advantage rules:

Lots of luck with getting U.S. Rep. Tom Rice’s help. I stopped by his Myrtle Beach office two years ago and asked if he could look into the Social Security Windfall Profit Act. What this act does is penalize police officers and firefighters when they apply for Social Security.

Police and firefighters don’t earn a large income, so many have to moonlight with other jobs. You must pay into the system 40 quarters; I had 90 quarters just from my second jobs. However, when I applied I was told my Social Security income would be decreased 42% because I received a municipal pension as a firefighter. We are not asking for a handout; we just want our fair share of monies we paid into the system from our second jobs. Police and firefighters should not be discriminated against for serving their community.

I have not heard from Congressman Rice. But, he will hear from us at the next election. Again, Mr. Cash – lots of luck.
