Spirits fell alongside Grainger smokestacks
Being born and raised in the Pee Dee and living over half of my life in South Carolina, it saddened me about the implosion of the Grainger Generating Plant. Thousands of people passed by this landmark daily traveling the Waccamaw River Bridge.
George Santayana said, “those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” In 2006, the Myrtle Beach Pavilion closed, was torn down, and replaced with a new boardwalk. Now the historic smokestacks.
Was a cost/benefit analysis study conducted regarding dismantling versus imploding? Is an auction planned to sell the bricks with the proceeds used to construct a replica of smokestacks and an official “Gateway to the Grand Strand” neon sign adjacent to the bridge?
