Lawmakers set to reform alimony practices
In the previous legislative session, a bipartisan House-Senate committee was formed by the Legislature to propose recommendations for alimony reform. Those recommendations have now been proposed in H4029. This bill proposes reform to long-established alimony laws such as permanent alimony and other rules that have outlived current times.
Some of those “other rules” addressed in the report are co-habitation and changes in circumstances which justify the termination or modification of permanent alimony. Permanent alimony has an extreme negative impact on the supporter’s life and must be changed to be made fair to all.
A group has been formed that has now grown to over 650 members statewide. The goal of the South Carolina Alimony Reform group is “Alimony reform = Fairness for all.” This group is asking our state and local legislators to support this bill.
