Write in Morris for Council 3

The last time a write-in candidate won a race in South Carolina was 1954 and Strom Thurmond was elected to the U.S. Senate. Thurmond ran because people were not happy with the candidates offered by either party.

It seems like history is repeating itself. The people of Horry County Council District 3 are not happy with the candidates offered by either the Democrats (Jimmy Washington) or the Republicans (Bob Kelly). Many of our local businessmen and women, and our local elected leaders, have asked Jason Morris to run as a write-in candidate.

Jason Morris believes that Horry County is the economic engine of South Carolina and it is time we started acting like it. Join me and write in Jason Morris on Tuesday. Let's make history.

Offshore test fans Should swim with fishes

If Gov. Nikki Haley, U.S. Rep. Tom Rice, N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory, or any other government officials and representatives doubt harm would be caused to marine life by seismic testing, let them strap on scuba gear and swim with the fishes while conducting the test. U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford, who opposes it, can help 'em strap on their gear. Let them witness first-hand how harmless it is.

We can get a big boat for media. Talk about a big splash!

Congress must fix incompetent TSA

It is interesting that it took Time Magazine, in their Dec. 14 edition, to expose the terrible flaws of our TSA. “96% is the TSA’s failure rate when Homeland Security Inspectors attempted to sneak fake bombs and weapons through passenger checkpoints this year.” And “ TSA officials cleared 73 airport workers for access to restricted areas even though their names appear in the government database of those with suspected terrorist connections…”

So what is our Congress, that has the oversight, doing about this? Nothing! Nor is our Congress concerned that the TSA has wasted billions of taxpayer money by using emergency powers “which are doing more harm than good.” We, the public, save pennies and hunt for bargains and the TSA circumvents all government contracting rules through the congressional granting of spending authority as they see fit using “other transaction” justification.

Time Magazine goes on to say that “TSA… is an agency with a disgruntled work force, ineffective equipment and procedures that don't provide safety. But Congress has its own reasons for leaving those powers in place.” So, maybe it is time for all of us that fly, to question our Congress men/women about their motivation.

Keep big news to front pages

Re Dec. 12 letter complaining of having local feature stories on the front page:

I agree with him that national and world news belong on the front page. And there should be more world and national news. The filler stories should be in the local section.

We moved down here 15 years ago and are still more interested in the nation and the world than in model airplanes and the sort. Don’t forget, all the tourists are from out of town and state. And many of the people that live here are from out of town and state. Why not poll The Sun News subscribers and see what the majority wants?
