St. Michael Church marks Jubilee year

On Tuesday, the doors of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome were opened by Pope Francis to mark the beginning of a Holy Year for Catholics, the Jubilee of Mercy. In the United States and around the world, cathedrals and select churches will have door-opening ceremonies this Sunday, Dec.13.

St. Michael Catholic Church in Garden City has been selected as one of seven churches in South Carolina to participate in this ceremony, with the Rev. Edward Fitzgerald presiding at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Model airplanes not big news

Monday's slim edition of The Sun News arrived on time. Now with a name with “news” in the title, one would expect to have news on the front page.

So what is your lead story on the front page? “Myrtle Beach area model airplane club still flying.” Give me a break. With all of the things going on in the world, you give us this. This is a nice story, usually printed as a filler, but front page?

David Gerkens, Myrtle Beach

Editor’s note: The newspaper’s policy for the front page is to focus on local news that readers cannot obtain anywhere else. The news of national and world affairs is inside.

Gay divorces hard on children

I read in The Sun News about a gay couple, Chef Cat Cora from the Food Channel and her wife Jennifer, seeking a divorce. They have four children.

We have a new generation of really screwed up children. They have no respect for their parents or teachers or resource officers and they supposedly come from what today is called a normal family with good income, a mom and dad, maybe a brother or sister.

Now we have deemed that a man can marry a man and woman can marry a woman. That is a bit screwy. Then we allow them to adopt children, because they can certainly not have any of their own. At what age does a child realize that she/he does not have a mom and dad, but a mom and mom? I believe that to be somewhat traumatic for that child, a’ la Rosie O'Donnell.

They, this wonderful couple, can no longer stand each other, so they file for a divorce. I would again think that this becomes a bit traumatic for the child. Those situations in a normal family are bad, I just can't imagine it in an abnormal family. Why do we allow this to happen? If you want to live together, just do it and be quiet. Have your fun and when you get tired of one another you just go your separate ways. No one gets hurt, no children are traumatized.

Your attitude of “I am gay and I want to rub it in your face” is inappropriate. You have the right to act that way according to the law, but others have their right to disapprove of it, and this is according to the law. When we are driving we have a speed limit. When you are living, you also have acceptable limits, you should live by those as well.

Immigrants take jobs from citizens

Re Monday letter from Dick Withington on immigrants and the economy:

Mr. Withington obviously chooses to ignore the many laws regarding illegal immigrants. There are severe penalties to employers caught hiring illegals. These include criminal and civil fines, as well as the loss of business licenses. Fines are $250-$2,000 per employee for first offense, and much more for second and third offenses. Harboring an illegal can result in up to 10 years in jail.

Evidently, the writer also feels it is OK to pay people sub-poverty wages and take jobs away from Americans. If I were a skilled carpenter or mason, I certainly would be sick and tired of someone who is here illegally taking my job and preventing me from earning a living wage.

It is true that American business has enticed immigrants to come here, yet the Republican Party, the so called “pro-business party” continually preaches against the practice. Ronald Reagan was wrong. The result is twice the illegals as before his amnesty agreement.

I am not for wholesale deportation, however, I think deportation is in order for those who take American jobs where there are skilled Americans available, regardless of wage. I wonder how Mr. Withington would feel if his job were taken by an illegal for half the pay.
