Cartoon’s message should not be ignored
Please hold the press on issuing an apology for your Nov. 22 political cartoon. It is unfortunate it offended anyone; however, the timeliness of its message should not be ignored.
As any student of history can attest, many Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi-controlled Europe and hoping for safety in the U.S. were denied entry in large part due to the anti-Semitic beliefs of one man, Breckinridge Long, who served as an assistant Secretary of State in Roosevelt's administration.
Long deliberately obstructed the lawful immigration of Jewish refugees into this country and unlawfully falsified the numbers who were admitted to give the impression the U.S. was meeting its quota. It has been estimated that 100,000 Jewish people would have survived if allowed legal entrance to our country. Those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it.
