Obama immigration policy should be enforcing existing law
Re editorial, “Obama deserves answer on immigration policy,” Nov 13:
After reading the editorial, I am left with even more questions than answers. I am shocked to hear that President Obama has a policy on immigration. That is a good step and it would be wise of him to discuss his policy with the American people.
Another question is how can immigrants be here while being “undocumented?” I would assume that in the country they were born in, they are indeed documented. There must be a record of when and where they were born. If by “undocumented” the writer is referring to the illegal immigrants who are in this country, how can they be considered as “undocumented?”
I am wondering when the Constitution was changed to allow the President to act as an emperor, as it seems to be assumed in the editorial? The writer points out that the frustration with Congress which has repeatedly failed to address the presence of 11 million illegal intruders in this country allows the President to enact his own policies as law and then expect them to be followed.
How much authority does the Executive Branch have to address a policy when Congress fails to act? None.
I would agree with the writer that the Congress has failed to act, not only on this issue but many more that have put this country is peril. By not enforcing the laws currently on the books, the President has allowed for these 11 million intruders to pose a security threat and even today by not enforcing the laws, as required under the Constitution, we still have by some estimates 1,100 illegal immigrants streaming across the borders unchecked and even helped by the very agents who are supposed to stop them and return them to their home country.
I realize the President has greater priorities he is pursuing than ensuring the safety of American Citizens, such as climate change and making terrible trade deals opening up our markets and jobs to be taken to foreign countries.
One of the grievous mistakes that the Congress has made is to fail to impeach the current President for failure to do his job and refusing to enforce the laws on the books. He has allowed “Sanctuary Cities” to flourish in the U.S. and to ignore the laws on the books. If the military failed to obey the rules, they would be tried and convicted of crimes. The President should be subject to the same rules.
His Justice Department is only allowed to go after the President's enemies, it is alleged, and to withhold prosecution from those who have clearly broken the law. The Democrats in Congress stopped Kate's Law from going into effect because it would put more illegal immigrants in prison for breaking the law. What?
I wonder how many of these illegal immigrants will commit crimes here in the U.S? If I believe the news reports, more Americans have been killed by these illegal immigrants than were killed in the recent Paris attacks. And the count continues.
There is a quick fix to the immigration issue if our inept President would just enforce the laws on the books. Most of these illegal immigrants are here to earn money . If the Obama Administration would enforce the law, then all immigrants in the USA would be enrolled in the program to identify them, ensure they have an active visa and that they are paying their taxes.
I urge all readers of this newspaper to read John Martinez's column in the Nov. 16 edition concerning the illegal immigrants and how they are impacting our economy.
President Obama likes to discuss, debate and lecture, but not to take any action. Sad.
The writer lives in Myrtle Beach.
