Speak up on HOA issues

Randall Hill/For The Sun News

If you’re not happy with your HOA/POA, here is some information that may be helpful.

Three meetings of the Homeowners Association Study Committee including State Sen. Luke A. Rankin, Chairman, Sen. Kevin Johnson, Rep. F. Michael Sottile, and Rep. Mike Ryhal have been scheduled.

If you have concerns you would like the HOA Study Committee to consider at the October 27, 2015 meeting, please provide it in writing to the HOA Study Committee staff, Paula Benson, at paulabenson@scsenate.gov

I am proposing an Office of Ombudsman for South Carolina which will provide an avenue for homeowners to challenge the HOA/POA president and board decisions and protocols, require HOA/POA board members and their property management companies attend state-recommended community management classes and to obtain state certification.

Eventually, it would be good to revamp the whole HOA concept in South Carolina from the South Carolina Nonprofit Corporation Act of 1994 which supports an outdated POA concept with an updated HOA concept.

But, first we have to grab the legislators’ attention by presenting our, the homeowners, concerns. Please, send an E-mail with your concerns.

The writer lives in Longs.
