Letter | We can improve our democracy by modifying term limit rules

Time to modify term limits

USA Today’s weekend edition said that U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, among others, has only attended 30 percent of the voting in the Senate this past year. The irony is that so many politicians, including our president, spend too much time on the campaign trail.

Almost every president, no matter which party, spends two years of their first term campaigning for re-election. All this campaigning while being paid may not be illegal, but it surely is immoral.

In 1951, the U.S. Constitution was ratified to limit the president’s time to two consecutive terms. What we need is to limit the president’s term to one six-year term limit. That way, the president can dedicate himself fully to the duties for which he is paid for.

Speaking of term limits, two terms in the Senate and six terms in the House should be plenty for any politician. The Founding Fathers did not intend for members of Congress to have a lifetime career.
