Davis entitled to beliefs but should resign post

TNS

Re: Sept. 5 letter from Debra Haught, “People smarter, kinder back in 50s and 60s”

It’s not a matter of being smarter or kinder. It’s a question as to whether Kim Davis has broken the law. Whether or not the football player Ms. Haught makes reference to did or did not “cheat,” we may never know unless witnesses with evidence come forward.

However, Kim Davis’ stance regarding her religious beliefs can not be refuted. Ms. Davis is absolutely entitled to her religious beliefs, but she has no authority to dictate who can or can not obtain a marriage license once the law has been established. If Ms. Davis’ has such strong convictions about her religious beliefs thus preventing her from performing the duties of her position, then she should resign as county clerk. She has no right to dictate other people’s beliefs or life choices. I don’t think Ms. Davis should have been incarcerated, I strongly believe once she refused to carry out her duties she should have been fired.

[Editor’s note: According to the Associated Press, Davis has refused to resign her $80,000-a-year job. As an elected official, she can lose her job only if she is defeated in an election or impeached by the state Legislature.]
