Letter | Time to bring the problem of suicide into the light, Myrtle Beach
Help bring suicide into the light
On Oct. 10, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will host an “Out of the Darkness” community walk in Myrtle Beach at Broadway at the Beach.
AFSP community walks will be held in hundreds of cities across the nation this fall, with thousands of walkers participating. The purpose is to raise awareness and funds to bring the topic of suicide from the shadows in order to save lives and provide hope to those who are struggling.
Approximately every 13 seconds, a life is lost to suicide in this country, with our veterans comprising more than 22 percent of these deaths. In South Carolina suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 15-34.
September is Suicide Prevention Month, and you can help.
Join us as we walk to save lives, honor loved ones and raise funds for suicide prevention. Make a difference by being a walker, sponsor or volunteer. To register, go to www.outofdarkness.org. Help us create a world without suicide.
If you are in crisis, please call 1-800-273-TALK (8255). You are not alone. Reach out for help and support. Visit the AFSP website at www.afsp.org for more information.
