Letter: Let judicial system determine Moorers’ fate in Heather Elvis case

Re: Aug. 11 letter from Debra Haught, “Smiling Moorers on front page an insult to Heather Elvis family”

After reading Ms. Haught’s letter, I am in total agreement about having empathy for the Elvis family.

Subsequent to that point we part company.

Media hurting the country? I don’t think so. The First Amendment of the Constitution states: (I will paraphrase) Congress shall not abridge freedom of the press.

Lawyers hurting the country? I don’t think so. The Fifth Amendment: No person shall be denied due process.

The Sixth Amendment: In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district where the crime shall have been committed.

The venue of the Moorers’ case has been transferred to Charleston County. This was done due to obvious reasons. The lawyers for the Moorers argued successfully to have the venue changed. I personally have heard many arguments in the “court of public opinion about the Moorer’s guilt or innocence.”

In my humble opinion, let’s allow the legal process run its course and dismount from the high horse of self-righteousness.
