Letter | Give every South Carolinian a say before we begin drilling offshore

We all must have a say on offshore drilling

Re Myrtle Beach City Council resolution opposing offshore drilling:

Regardless of your views on this matter, shouldn't this be decided by all the good people of South Carolina?

My personal view is that we have learned nothing from the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico a few years ago. Seismic testing in an environment where some of the wildlife navigates by intricate sonar seems to be devastating enough.

Regardless of the cold hard facts, in a world where electronic communication is rampant, why can't this be put up for public vote by all the people, not just a handful?

As a stockholder in some companies, when meetings are held, I am mailed a proxy. If I am not attending the meeting, I can call or e-mail my vote. I have my say. With a subject as delicate as the testing and drilling, the good people of South Carolina should have their say - every one of us.

This is a paradise; let’s not ruin it for big oil company profits.
