Letter | Gov. Nikki Haley needs to learn about the Confederate flag’s history

HISTORY

Haley doesn’t understand the flag

I am very disappointed in Gov. Nikki Haley and others who have rushed to judgment in wanting the Confederate flag removed from the grounds of South Carolina’s State House. I'm also very disappointed that several retail outlets have discontinued selling Confederate flag items.

The Confederate flag, also known as the “Southern Cross,” has had nothing to do with slavery or black suppression; it was plain and simple a battle flag. I suggest everyone go online and check out the history of the Confederate flag, especially you, Gov. Haley.

If you want to be fair, the American flag should be removed everywhere it flies, as many more atrocities have been committed under it. (I'm not at all in favor of removing either).

If Haley wants to be politically-correct, I suggest she erect a big bronze statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee on State House grounds.

Lee should be seated side saddle on his beautiful white horse holding a rainbow flag.
