Letter | Confederate flag: Myrtle Beach City Council betrayed true Southerners

GOVERNMENT

City Council sold out on Confederate flag

Are you familiar with the word, scalawag? Originally, it referred to low-grade farm animals. Later, it was used as a term of derision toward Southerners after the “War Between the States” that turned on their own in the interest of monetary and land gains.

It is unfortunate we have our own set of scalawags in the form of Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes and the rest of the Myrtle Beach City Council.

The resolution regarding the Confederate battle flag is clearly a move of political and monetary bottom-feeding. It is shameful that Rhodes and company have, again, sold out their own for unrealized financial interests.

They are not worthy of the name Southerner and all it implies.

Some of us still understand loyalty to faith, family and folk. Sadly, very sadly, the Council does not.
