Letter | Offshore drilling: Because no one knows when Jesus will return, take care of Earth

The Sierra Club has many facts that the public should know about off shore drilling. We Christians believe that Jesus has it all in control and we are not to worry.

He is coming back to get us and will give us a new heaven and a new earth.

God also gave man dominion over the earth. We are to take care of it. No one knows when Jesus is coming back and how long we have to live here. That being the case, I think that we should be informed. In offshore drilling, ignorance may not end up being blissful.

It bothers me that the government has many oil spills that are never reported to the public. It bothers me that spills have been going on for decades and we have not been informed. It bothers me that scientists are not able to get accurate reports. It bothers me that there are so many unknown factors.

For example, how many white whales have to be left before they cannot communicate with each other to mate, which results in annihilation?

Where exactly are they planning to put this ugly industrial complex, where it comes in on shore? Is the government planning to give them the wetlands around Georgetown and those beautiful preserved islands?

Who wants to give up their oceanfront property for ugly industrial use?

Will the federal government actually allow the state to keep part of the revenue?

How much gas is actually out there? Will it make a dent in the United States’ need for oil?

Money is not the root of all evil; the love of money is the root of all evil.

South Carolina is the closest to paradise on this earth on a year round basis that one will ever get. If you don’t believe it, just travel.

Do we want to give up our quality of life?

This energy issue will come up for the rest of your life and mine – every 5 years. The oil companies will never give up.

Get informed, stay informed and fight. Our coast is worth fighting for.

The writer lives in Conway.
