Letter | Memorial Day: We are called to not forget their sacrifice
HOLIDAY
We are called to not forget their sacrifice
Memorial Day is a day to remember and be thankful for the brave men and women who sacrifice their lives that we might be free.
We remember, reflect, and respect their sacrifice.
A research team at Johns Hopkins University conducted a survey of “the things we most often forget.” Their findings?
On the top of the list was names, at 83 percent, followed by where something is located at 60 percent and telephone numbers next.
The Bible is filled with the concept of remembering and paying honor to whom honor is due. Concerning those who gave their lives for us, we might know their names, how or where they died, how to get in touch with their family, and even the words to say if we did.
Yet, on Memorial Day, there will be a number of observances and words said. Will we remember them? Or even their faces? Will we remember what we did on this Memorial Day to remember, reflect, and show respect for their sacrifice?
Jesus said, “Greater love has no man than this, but to lay down one’s life for another.” These brave men and women paid the ultimate sacrifice for us.
Today, we give thanks.
