Letter | $45 million for new license plate a waste of money

The current South Carolina license plate features a dark blue palmetto tree and crescent moon against the sunrise. The plate slogan, developed by the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, invites visitors to the state’s tourism site, www.travel2SC.com. Officials are planning to phase out the plate, in part because of complaints that it portrays Clemson University’s school colors, orange and purple.

Unbelieveable!

I read the license plate story three times just to be sure I wasn't missing something.

Our DMV is going to spend $45 million to change a perfectly good license plate? You've got to be kidding. They will spend $45 million because one or two people think the current plates have Clemson colors.

I went outside to study my plate: letters and numbers are 2.5 inches tall and 1 inch wide making them very visible. The orange is of a fiery orange sunrise or sunset, whichever you prefer. The blue palm tree and mountains are nowhere near purple.

Our strong leaders are bowing down to a couple of folks who are color blind. This is the most stupid thing I've ever heard of.

The DMV has created a multitude of specialty plates and the inconsistency is the issue, not the few that the colors offend. Spend the $45 million on roads and license mopeds and all trailers to generate road repair revenue. Nothing is wrong with current plates, it’s just a waste of money to appease a few.
