Letter | Amphitheater fits bill for locals and tourists
A amphitheater is a much better idea than performing arts center. I read with interest about the Myrtle Beach City Council's idea for an 8,000 to 10,000-seat amphitheater.
This type of facility would be much more beneficial to the average citizen and tourist in Myrtle Beach than a small performing arts center, which would duplicate the function and mission of the number of performance venues that already exist.
Myrtle Beach doesn't currently have a facility where large numbers of citizens and tourists can go to see celebrity concerts. I believe the majority of residents and tourists would get much greater use from a this than another 650-seat center that largely duplicates The Palace, Alabama Theater, The Carolina Opry and the House of Blues.
Too bad we weren't given this option before the council rushed to put something up for vote that almost half of the citizens who voted rejected. Before building gets started, let's do all residents a favor and not just a few, and scrap the center. Build the amphitheater.
