Surfside Beach doesn’t need county’s beach tent ban

A recent letter to the editor questioned Surfside Beach's non-participation in the countywide beach tent ban. Horry County's ban affects only unincorporated areas such as Garden City Beach, etc.

Surfside Beach is incorporated. Decisions, based on what is best for the town of Surfside Beach and its guests and residents, are made by our mayor and town council, with input from residents. The county doesn't regulate our beach any more than they do the beach within the city of Myrtle Beach.

We didn't supersede the ban; we simply weren't included.

Our town council decided that it was not an issue at this time for our town's beaches. If that changes in the future, and the the ban appears to be needed, their vote will eliminate tents on Surfside Beach as well.

Definitely very special, Surfside Beach is often ridiculed for being so small and incorporated. However, taking into consideration state and federal laws, that allows the community to decide for itself what it does and does not want within its boundaries.

As long as our taxes support our community, we have that right. What was necessary for some of the other beaches was not necessary at this time for Surfside Beach.

It’s our choice.
