Don’t waste money upgrading already great stadium in Myrtle Beach

Once again, the City of Myrtle Beach fails to be fiscally responsible. Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium was recently renovated, with an excellent artificial playing surface, an excellent scoreboard, and more. It is already the most modern and functional high school football-soccer stadium in the Lowcountry. Putting $5 million more into it would be an irresponsible expenditure when the beach lifeguard services could use the help to provide acceptable public safety on our beaches. Mayor John Rhodes and Councilman Wayne Gray, who are well-known sports fanatics, need to take care of public safety services before getting their kicks by trying to make Doug Shaw look like Brooks stadium.

I encourage city residents to flood the mayor’s office and City Council members with calls and emails to stop this addictive, unnecessary spending on sports venues. If you want to waste money, send it my way.

Jim DeFeo, Surfside Beach
