Warped spending priorities in Surfside Beach
I am appalled that Surfside Beach Town Council voted to extend the contract of the town administrator by 18 months - with a 5 percent raise. Her salary was $96,600 and rises to $101,430. (Did she also receive the previously awarded 3 percent COLA?)
It came during a time when one councilman, David Pelligrino, started the budget meeting with comments of cutting services we all depend on, such as police, fire and public works. Our police officers, firefighters and public works department employees need a raise to provide the basic necessities for themselves and their families.
Where is the 5 percent plus raise for them?
Our town is clean because of the work by our Public Works Department. Our property values depend on the services provided by all of the groups above. In a town that is two square miles, a $101,430 annual salary is not justifiable when compared to other municipalities of similar size.
Is this the best use of my tax dollars? I think not!
