Speed limit makes a busy road dangerous
There was another serious accident on U.S. 501 Thursday, Nov. 11.
That’s why it is insane to leave the speed limit at 55 mph - a freeway speed - on the stretch of U.S. 501 between Conway and Myrtle Beach, which includes traffic lights, businesses and other access roads. Going at that speed (and most drivers are doing 60 to 65), there is no way anyone can stop suddenly when the car in front of you decides to make a turn into a business or the traffic light suddenly changes.
What is the hurry on this stretch of road to go 55 mph when you are going to have to stop in a short distance for a red light? When are we going to change this speed limit to a reasonable speed for the traffic and many signals? There is no reason to have a freeway speed limit on a stretch of road heavily traveled by school buses, many large dump trucks, etc. The death toll and injuries continue to mount.
