97 percent of climate scientists believe climate change is real? Not so fast

Re “Climate change is already affecting our coast, time to act now” letter by Terry Munson.

Mr. Munson's thoughtful letter is tainted in by last paragraph because of his incomprehensible reference to the “97 percent of climate scientists.”

This always suspicious statistic has been so thoroughly debunked that even he must be aware of its unsupportable lineage. The source for this metric is the Zimmerman/Doran survey done by a student at the University of Illinois and her thesis adviser.

Their two question email survey was sent to 3146 individuals who listed climate science as an area of expertise. It was not sent to those scientists who were known to disagree with man-made global warming as a done deal, or to solar scientists, meteorologists or astronomers.

Only 79 responses were received!

Why ruin an otherwise fine article with this kind of drivel? Munson just couldn't resist, I guess.
