Banks are required to send all counterfeit bills to the Secret Service. Banks will not exchange a real bill for a fake bill. The Secret Service will also not exchange real bills for fake bills.
Their web site states: “There is no remuneration for the return of the counterfeit bill, but it is doing the ‘Right Thing’ to help combat counterfeiting.”
