Want to try the Rivian R2? Here's how you can secure a test drive
You can get behind the wheel of the Rivian R2 electric SUV this June even if you aren't ready to buy one.
The Rivian R2 is one of the most anticipated electric vehicle releases of the year because of its pricing, segment, and potential to compete with the popular Tesla Model Y. It's a huge release for the company and the next phase in its plan to create adventure-ready electric vehicles for the mainstream and luxury car markets.
Rivian's R2 is smaller and more affordable than the R1 electric truck we tested for USA TODAY Cars and the electric SUV. It still has impressive performance specs and comes with plenty of innovative features.
Here's how you can test drive a Rivian R2 this June.
How to experience a Rivian R2 demo drive
You can book a Rivian R2 electric SUV demo drive and try the EV for yourself starting June 9, according to the company's website. Demo drives of the R2 will only be offered at Rivian Spaces, which are showrooms where drivers and potential buyers can learn more about Rivian's EVs through an immersive brand experience.
Any driver can schedule a test drive of the R2 from June 9, but priority will be given to reservation holders. The EV's reservation fee is $100, which acts as a fully refundable deposit.
Rivian Spaces are located across the United States and Canada. Auto enthusiasts and fans of the brand can also learn more about R1 and R2 builds, specs, and configurations at these spaces along with potentially experiencing a test drive of different models.
Why is the Rivian R2's release so heavily anticipated?
The automotive world is excited about the R2's arrival because the Tesla Model Y has dominated the small electric SUV space. Rivian's R1T electric truck and R1S electric SUV boast impressive performance specs and designs. The R2 base model will start around $48,490 before taxes and additional fees, making it the most affordable Rivian thus far.
The R1T ($72,990) and R1S ($76,990) aren't as accessible to many mainstream car buyers looking for more affordable vehicles, so the R2 SUV is positioned to make a greater sales impact.
Aside from more attractive pricing for its smaller model, Rivian is also appealing to drivers who take the road less traveled with its adventure-ready vehicles. Rivian models are designed with unique suspensions and software that makes off-roading easier for drivers. Like Japanese automaker Subaru, Rivian is targeting drivers who love the outdoors and want vehicles that are rugged and capable.
Is the Rivian R2 a good SUV?
It's too early to deliver a verdict on the Rivian R2, but based on its specs, it has major potential. The rear-wheel drive Standard Single-motor Long Range trim boasts 350 horsepower. It goes from 0-60 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds and has an estimated 345 miles of driving range.
Rivian's R2 Performance trim is the first trim hitting the streets this summer, starting at $57,990. The Performance trim produces a massive 656 horsepower and rockets from 0-60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds. It has 330 miles of estimated driving range.
Rivian's Premium trim will be available for purchase after the Performance trim. It starts at $53,990. Slotted between the base model Standard (set for 2027) and the top-tier performance trim, the Premium produces 450 horsepower. It goes from 0-60 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds and has 330 miles of estimated driving range as well.
From a performance perspective, the R2 Performance (which will be the first R2 you can buy) is a notable model in its segment based on specs. The most appealing R2 for the average driver (because of pricing and range), the Standard, will arrive last.
Rivian's new electric SUV has a lot to prove to truly compete with segment leaders like the best-selling Tesla Model Y, but it's intriguing enough to excite auto enthusiasts and attract buyers who are waiting on an entry-level Rivian model.
