Damaged caused by Ian totals tops $2.5 million in Myrtle Beach, officials say

Hurricane Ian caused more than $2.5 million in damage to public and private property in Myrtle Beach, according to a city news release.

The $2.69 million estimate includes a preliminary total of $1 .67 million for damage to private property and an estimated $1.02 million in damage to city-owned property, the release states.

Private properties, including homes and businesses, experienced damage to roofs, awnings and other structures. Dune walkovers, traffic signal cabinets and sewer pump stations were among damages the city dealt with.

The totals do not include damage to the beach, which is being assessed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

“Note that dollar amounts may change as additional damages are discovered or reported,” the city said in its release. “During next week’s meeting, City Council will consider waiving building permit fees for repairs to Ian-related damage.

The hurricane made landfall in on the northeastern coast of South Carolina in Georgetown on the afternoon of Sept. 30.
