Hurricane Ian is about to make landfall south of the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area and locals were still on the roads in the Socastee section of Horry County as of about 8 a.m. this morning.

Socastee is home to the Rosewood neighborhood which backs right up against the intracoastal waterway. This neighborhood is known to flood in some areas amid and after hurricanes.

“It gets pretty nasty, but I’m on Boxwood which never floods,” Alan Coulumbus, a Rosewood neighborhood resident said on Friday morning. “It’s really a nice neighborhood here, it’s just that it floods. I’ve talked to people that have lived here for 40 years and they say its just one flooding after another.”

The intracoastal waterway turns into the Waccamaw River south of the Socastee Swing Bridge. This body of water is prone to flooding as water travels south from the North Carolina section of the river.

Many businesses such as the Exxon gas station on Socastee Boulevard near Highway 544 are set to remain open throughout the day, as of around 8 a.m. this morning. A nail salon across the street from the station is even set to remain open, too, unless clients start canceling appointments, an employee said.

All in all, the atmosphere was pretty calm and drivers were still on the roads in Socastee early this morning.
