After 4 inches of snow, how are Myrtle Beach’s roads doing? The latest road conditions
After getting pelted with snow overnight, Myrtle Beach area governments are trying to improve road conditions for drivers.
Government officials are encouraging people to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary. No bridges or roads have been shut down because of the weather in North Myrtle Beach, said Spokeswoman Lauren Jessie.
“(Crews) have been working around the clock beginning on interstate and primary routes and will continue to do those until they are clear. Then they will move on to secondary routes,” Hannah Robinson with the South Carolina Department of Transportation in an email to The Sun News.
Focus is currently on clearing roads like U.S. 501, S.C. 31 and S.C. 22 and then smaller roads after, said Horry County Spokeswoman Mikayal Moskov in a text.
Here’s how the roads are around noon.
Myrtle Beach
The majority of Myrtle Beach’s roads are still blanketed in snow and ice. On many streets, the snow has become compacted and icy while it’s melted away on others.
North Kings Highway has a layer of snow on it, as well as Ocean Boulevard on the north end of town and near the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk.
U.S. 17 Business has a few clear patches headed north, SCDOT traffic cameras show. This includes near 29th Avenue North. Farrow Parkway in Market Common has a layer of snow over black ice on the roadway.
Conway
U.S. 501 has roads conditions vary depending on how close or far it is from Conway, SCDOT traffic cameras show. The highway sections near Carolina Forest are still heavily blanketed in snow while stretches in between Coastal Carolina University and downtown Conway are cleared.
Overall, most of Conway has some sort of winter precipitation on the road, said Spokeswoman June Wood. This includes snow, ice and slush. The city has not begun plowing but will put together a snow removal plan later today.
North Myrtle Beach and Little River
Streets within North Myrtle Beach and Little River are still being cleared, traffic cameras show. U.S. 17 near S.C. 22 is still covered in a layer of snow. The westbound lane of U.S. 17 near Bayshore Drive looks clear while the eastbound lane has a layer of snow.
Socastee and Murrells Inlet
Heading south, highways around Socastee and Murrells Inlet are also covered in snow and slush. According to SCDOT cameras, U.S. 17 near Bellamy Avenue still has a thick layer of snow on the road.
Parts of S.C. 544 have been cleared by the sunshine, but most of the road continues to look white.
